Don’t Make Me Think!
Author: Steve Krug
Published: October 2005
Synopsis
This book covers usability on the web by looking at how users actually use the web and provides some good design guidelines with regard to visual hierarchy and structure within screen design, navigation and content.
The advice on low cost usability is really nice and something I have tried a couple of times before, which works well, and I will be attempting to push through on more projects.
Summary
This is one of the most pleasant reads to be found regarding usability on the web. The content is positive and empowering, with points made in a well structured and clearly written style.
Steve doesn?t spend time knocking work that suffers with poor usability rather he provides insights as to where these works could be impoved through different approaches, better understanding of users drawing his extensive knowledge and experience of user behaviour and comments through out the book to support both text and visual examples.
An excellent book that is very easy to read, well written, well structured, and with some great observations, advice, comments, sound bites and references, from the preface to the end.
This book provides a great framework to pin further usability knowledge to. This book is intended as a quick read which it accomplishes this superbly. A book for all in Usability, User Experience and Software Development that want to know more about the nature of the user.
This book was not intended as a comprehensive text, but provides many real life examples to draw on.
I attended a London AIGA meeting, and was lucky enough to meet and see Steve Krug speak, and he came across very well, he is a charismatic and friendly professional who will always provide a great insight to the field of usability. Where Jacob Nielsen comes across as a Minster for the ?Order of Usability? from a George Orwelllian novel, Steve comes across as the Dad from Wonder Years.
Shelf Life: Occasional reference, good reminder of the overlooked simple things
